Introduction

Emotional intelligence can be a bit difficult to wrap your head around but I think I have a good example of how it might work. I have a friend who said that leaning into a particular phrase saved her marriage. The phrase was “You do you, Boo!” and both her husband and her use it instead of questioning why each other is making a particular choice about something. It suggests an understanding and acceptance of one’s partner’s individuality and the ability to support their personal growth.  Here are a few reasons why it reflects emotional intelligence:

  1. Empathy and Understanding: It shows the ability to recognize and respect the needs and feelings of the partner.
  2. Conflict Resolution: It implies a willingness to avoid unnecessary conflicts by allowing the partner the freedom to be themselves.
  3. Support and Encouragement: It exhibits the quality of providing emotional support and encouragement for the partner’s choices and actions.
  4. Emotional Regulation: It indicates the ability to manage one’s own emotions and reactions, promoting a healthier and more supportive relationship dynamic.

Using such phrases can contribute to a positive and respectful relationship environment, which is a sign of emotional intelligence.

It involves skills such as emotional awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and social skills. Additionally, 90% of top performers at work exhibit high levels of emotional intelligence. High emotional intelligence is also linked to better mental health outcomes, lower stress levels, and greater overall success.

In the workplace, emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in leadership effectiveness, predicting 67% of leadership success. Companies focusing on hiring and developing emotionally intelligent employees experience 22% higher revenue growth. Studies indicate that employees with high emotional intelligence outperform those with lower emotional intelligence by 127%. Higher levels of job satisfaction and lower turnover rates are also associated with emotionally intelligent employees.

Furthermore, emotional intelligence fosters strong team dynamics and collaboration. Teams characterized by high emotional intelligence achieve greater productivity and innovation. Emotional intelligence enables better handling of work-related stress and maintaining a positive work-life balance, contributing to overall job satisfaction. Leaders with high emotional intelligence are more likely to inspire and motivate their teams toward achieving goals.

Comparing Emotional Intelligence and IQ

Emotional intelligence is a better predictor of career success compared to IQ. Emotional intelligence accounts for 90% of the factors differentiating high performers from their peers. Individuals with high emotional intelligence earn an average of $29,000 more annually than their counterparts. Emotional intelligence also plays a significant role in academic success, predicting better academic performance among college students.

Organizations that prioritize emotional intelligence are 22 times more likely to see higher performance rates than those organizations that do not. Emotional intelligence ranks among the top 10 most in-demand skills and is expected to remain so at least through 2025. Though its importance is evident, only 42% of organizations provide specific training to help employees cultivate emotional intelligence skills. Companies neglecting the development of these skills may experience lower productivity, stunted innovation, and an uninspired workforce.
