These products were gifted to me to try so that I could share about them with you, but my opinions are always my own.

Women Over 50 have different hair and skincare needs

Recently, I was invited to try several products from Better Not Younger, a company founded by Sonsoles Gonzalez to address the biology and root causes of aging hair.  She believes that as we age, we can look better without  necessarily just trying to look younger. She began the company because she was struggling to find products that worked on her own changing hair.  She stated that “After 25 years working on haircare brands for Procter & Gamble and L’Oréal, I was amazed that there was still so little out there for women like me.”

That’s true of many products for women, but happily brands are realizing that women over 50 have different needs and also that they are in one of the highest percentages of people when it comes to buying power.

What happens to our hair after 50?

After the age of fifty, hair may become thinner. It also might show up in areas where we’d rather not see it, but that’s a whole other story. This happens because estrogen and progesterone levels fall during and after menopause. Hair might also become thinner because hair follicles shrink. Hair also grows more slowly and falls out more easily because of this.

How to Care for Your Hair as You Age

Wash your hair less frequently. Washing your hair too often can cause it to become dry and brittle. Two to three times a week should be sufficient.

Eat a protein-rich diet. Because hair follicles are made of protein, it’s important to get enough in your diet.  Foods such as eggs, red meats, spinach, green leafy vegetables,  berries, and avocados are all great diet choices. A collagen supplement might also help.

Check the medications you’re taking. Some medications can interfere with hair growth or can cause hair loss. Check with your pharmacist to see if your medication is one of those.

Be mindful that hair dryers and heat styling tools can damage hair.  Try not to use these tools on a daily basis. If you do, use a protectant before using them.

Choose the right products. Better Not Younger products are made specifically to support the needs of changing hair.
