International Women’s Day takes place on March 8th. This year, their theme is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.” The theme corresponds with the United Nation’s Women’s new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. It will also mark several other moments in the work towards gender equality. Their hashtag is #eachforequal

Despite some changes, which when examined individually, seemed truly reat, real change has been excruciatingly slow. Not a single country around the globe can say they have true gender equality. Melinda Gates says that according to the World Economic Forum, if we keep proceeding as we are now, it will take 208 years to achieve gender equality in the United States alone! Women need to have more power and influence, both in their world and in their homes. There are many obstacles that still need to be overcome in order for this to happen: there are barriers that keep women from advancing in their workplaces such as stereotypes and sexual harassment; women need to have larger roles in technology, political leadership and technology and other areas that impact our society; pressure needs to be placed on institutions to encourage them to make the right decisions when it comes to gender equality.

The observance of International Women’s Day 2020 by the United Nations will take place at the United Nations Secretariat in New York on Friday, 6 March 2020, from 10 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

“The Observance aims to bring together the next generations of women and girl leaders and gender equality activists with the women’s rights advocates and visionaries who were instrumental in creating the Beijing Platform for Action more than two decades ago.”

Women are beginning to speak out, tell their stories and take their place amongst those who can influence change. Hopefully, we can all help to tork to speed up the progress towards gender equality.
