The ExtraCare Charitable Trust – a Different Senior Care Concept
We may be living longer but we’re not always living better.
There are many reasons for this: decreased availability of monies for health care and senior care programs, families that are spread out across the country and even the world now, and increasing rates of dementia diagnoses.
Just this week, the Alzheimer’s Association in the United States just released a startling statistic that said that 1 out of every 3 seniors who dies has some form of dementia! This increase may be due in part to war injuries, sports injuries and the longer life span of people with conditions that will ultimately lead to dementia.
As I’ve mentioned in the past, we are due for a silver tsunami in the very near future and we are NOT ready. There is much to be done here and throughout the world.
Recently I came across an organization in England called The ExtraCare Charitable Trust which looks hopeful as an alternative to nursing care homes. This charity operates 13 retirement villages and 17 smaller housing developments across the Midlands and the North of the UK.
What I found most exciting about it is that when a senior’s health begins to deteriorate or dementia rears its ugly head, the senior is still able to stay at their home and receive care there. As one resident put it, he feels they are AT home rather than IN a home.
Here’s a lovely video explaining the concept and their amenities.
What do you think of this concept?

This is a great concept. Feels like home. Seniors will love it here. I think the amenities are great but is it affordable?
Since this senior residency is in the UK, and is backed by a charitable trust, it will be more affordable than many of the options that seniors in the United States and Canada have. The concept of a charity to pay for care for our elders – I’m not sure that would work here. Any thoughts?
I think this is better than in house caring. They can still perform long walk inside the village. Personally, I saw many seniors that are weakening as they are not walking. Loneliness and simple task like walking can greatly affect their body. The more that they are not walking the sooner that their body weaken. You can visit my guide here : http://homecaresandiego.wordpress.com/ This is my guide on how to take care of them and therefore can prolong their life.
I think this is great. I love the amenities. I would love to be taken cared of in that place.
Glad to have read this blog. Actually it is great to know seniors can avail a place that is more likely than a nursing homes and from where they can get the same care and attention.
Hi Shelley thanks for the lovely piece, I work for The ExtraCare Charitable Trust and we really do have the welfare of our residents at heart. Not only do I work here but my own grandparents lived at one of our beautiful villages so I really have seen the benefits from all angles. They have top class facilities and care if it’s needed. I hope other countries can follow suit. We actually have 16 villages and 4 smaller housing developments not 17 and 13 as you’d written though just to amend that.
Thank you.
